WEEK 2 - Graphic Notation | Unit - Composition

WE ARE LEARNING TO 

1. Interpret graphic notation

2. Notate a composition using graphic notation.

What is graphic notation?

A graphic score involves using non-traditional music notation consisting of signs, symbols, words and sometimes specific notes to indicate what the performer is to play.

Answer the questions after watching the video. (This task does not need to be submitted on SeeSaw)

1. What type of sound is represented by the straight lines?

2. What do the dots represent?

3. What do the zig-zag lines represent?

4. What does the wavey lines represent?

5. What do the slanted lines represent?

6. What do the signs that look like mountains represent?

1. Choose ONE song from the excerpts above.

2. Create a graphic notation for the excerpt. Make sure your excerpt is no longer than 90 seconds - (30 seconds to 90 seconds).

3. Use a ruler to point out the beat and rhythm notated in your graphic score.

4. Practice it so that each time you are making improvements.

5. Once you are able to fluently point out the beat and rhythm using your graphic notation, create a video (like Mr. Kant's) showing a performance of your graphic notation.

 

VIDEO GUIDELINES

1. There should be no talking in your video.
 
2. Make sure you begin promptly.
 
3. Your graphic notation must be clear
 
4. The music must be clearly played in the background
 
5. The video recording must show that you are using a pointer and clearly pointing to your graphic notation in time with the music (beat and rhythm).
 
6. Please make sure to submit your video recording on SeeSaw and placed in the Music Folder (Brown folder). Your work will not be assessed if you place it in your class feed.
 
7. The video is due before next WebEx Session.
